Law & Regulation
Understanding the complexities of real estate laws and regulations is essential to navigating the land development process successfully. Throughout the Master of Land and Property Development (MLPD) program, several courses provide exposure to the legal and regulatory frameworks that influence real estate transactions. These include local ordinances, zoning regulations, Letters of Intent (LOIs), Purchase and Sale Agreements (PSAs), title commitments, and other contractual obligations. Developing a comprehensive understanding of these elements is critical to identifying potential risks, evaluating development opportunities, and ensuring compliance throughout a project's lifecycle. From initial site acquisition and due diligence to entitlement, construction, and final disposition, legal considerations influence nearly every stage of development. Understanding potential legal challenges allows developers to make informed decisions while protecting their investments. The MLPD program has strengthened my understanding of these legal principles and I have applied this knowledge to real-world development scenarios, bridging the gap between academic coursework and professional practice.
In LDEV 651, we went into great detail about PSAs, LOIs, and other contract related documents. In LDEV 687, we designed a single-family residential development under UDO regulations.
